Thank you, and goodnight!August 21st, 2014
I remember September 3rd, 2008. It was my first day at the University of Saskatchewan. I was walking to class when a familiar face caught my eye. I thought to myself, “Hey, I know this guy! It’s Cam, the trombone player from the jazz intensive I was in last year! We should start a ska band.” It was kind of a half-hearted thought. I never really figured anything would come of it, considering that we were both about to pursue engineering degrees. At the time, I had never sang or played guitar in public, and Emmett was still in 8th grade. Yet, somehow, a few months later we were a five-piece group, holding our first rehearsal in my parents’ basement.
Calling ourselves “Drop Zone Response,” our one and only goal was to headline the former Lydia’s Pub in Saskatoon. We quickly got to work learning ska-punk covers and writing originals in hopes of crafting a sound similar to that of my hometown idols, North of Shorty. Several rehearsals and one infamous house party later, we decided it was time to hit the studio (aka the Rogers brothers’ basement). After a week of learning how to record with pirated software, broken headphones, and a pile of dirty socks, the “Every Band Needs A Basement Demo” basement demo was produced. That was May, 2009. The rest, as they say, is history.
If you told me back then where Misterfire would be five-and-a-half years later, I probably would have just laughed it off. Yet, here we stand, with an album, an EP, a CBC Regional Top 10 Searchlight finish, a Western Canadian tour and a metric tonne of shows under our belts (at least four of which were at Lydia’s before it closed). Time and time again, we have managed to surpass our own expectations, growing as both musicians and individuals. I am truly amazed at what this group has accomplished over the years, which makes it difficult for me to say goodbye to it. However, as is the way of the world, all people (including myself) must move on to bigger and better things, be that careers, families or other projects. Thus, we have decided to end things on a high note, and will no longer be performing together under the name Misterfire.
From the bottom of our hearts, we want to sincerely thank each and every one of our friends, family and fans that have supported us over the years: Owen and Debbie Fortosky, who gave us a practice space whenever we needed it, and came to almost every single one of our shows; Mark Klopoushak and Jordan Smith for making our dream of a full length album come true; Earl Pereira and Kate Matthews, for giving us a killer follow-up EP and countless words of wisdom; Bryn Becker, Michael Stankowski, and Leejay Schmidt for all their media, sound, and website expertise; and anyone who ever came to a show, bought a CD, or even shared one of our facebook statuses. While you may have heard this line countless times before, know that Emmett, Cam, Jordan, Ethan and myself could not have come this far without your love and support. It means the world to us.
Thank you for listening.
